Prior General marks the anniversary of Archbishop Romero

Thirty years have passed since the death of Oscar Arnulfo Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, killed whilst at the altar celebrating Mass in a Carmelite chapel on 24th March 1980.

The Prior General of the Carmelite Order, Fr. Fernando Millán Romeral, O. Carm., remembered the anniversary in a celebration of the Eucharist in Onda, Spain, during his canonical visit to the Province of Arago-Valentina.

Last November, the Prior General visited the members of the Carmelite family in El Salvador. Accompanied by many lay Carmelites, Fr. Fernando celebrated the Eucharist in the crypt of the Cathedral of San Salvador near the tomb of Archbishop Romero. In his address, the Prior General also recalled the famous homily of Monsenor Romero on the Carmelite Scapular.

On the occasion of the visit to El Salvador the Prior General received as a gift a picture (shown above) portraying Oscar Romero with the scapular together with Our Lady of Mount Carmel. As a reminder of Romero's commitment to Justice and Peace and his devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the painting can now be found in front of the General Council meeting room in the General Curia in Rome.
